Episode 3G, A NEW HOPE

It is a period of civil war among the iPhone hacking groups.

The Rebel iPhone Dev Team faction, striking from a hidden hacker base, won its first victory against The Galactic iEmpire, uploading video demonstrations of the iEmpire's ultimate mobile OS for the iPhone and iPod Touch being unlocked, a vital step in the war to hack into Apple’s OS 2.0: a fully operational armored mobile operating system with enough power to destroy an entire planetful of Windows Mobile Devices.

Pursued by the rival Geohot iPhone hacking faction, and the seeming withdrawal of Zibri of ZiPhone fame for the time being from the unlock battle, eager users are hoping that OS 2.0 is soon hacked by the iPhone Dev Team, custodian of the unlock that can save iPhone and iPod Touch users and restore freedom to the galaxy.

Ok, so that’s the ‘Star Wars’ inspired introduction to the iPhone 3G hacking wars. We last looked at the race to be first to bring an iPhone 3G unlock to the world in an article entitled Geohot says “no unlock” for iPhone 3G, only for iPhone 2G on OS 2.0.

Sadly, the state of affairs in that article hasn’t changed: there is still NO unlock for the iPhone 3G, and no unlock is expected soon, as Apple has closed previous security holes allowing easy hacking. This means we’ll all have to simply wait until the various iPhone hacker factions figure it out, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel!

An iPhone 2G upgraded to Apple’s new iPhone OS 2.0 is expected to be easy to both unlock and jailbreak, with jailbreaking allowing users to run unauthorised third party programs alongside authorised third-party apps downloaded through the new App Store.

That means the iPhone 3G and the iPod Touch are also able to be jailbroken very soon, which is what many users want, giving them to freedom to run whatever apps they want.

Given that many unlock original iPhone users running OS 1.1.4 or earlier would like to run the new OS 2.0 and continue using whatever SIM card they want, original iPhone owners around the world are desperately hoping that the iPhone Dev Team will soon release its highly publicised unlocking tool, which so far has only been demonstrated in a succession of video clips.

So, when is the tool coming, and will it be available for both Mac and Windows users? And who will release it first?
