"The mobile operator-centric WAP-based ecosystem for applications has been challenged, unsuccessfully before," said In-Stat analyst Bill Hughes. One example that comes to mind is the way particular telcos and banks got together to deliver banking services via WAP. The problem for customers was that they missed out unless their carrier and bank were in bed together. And telcos stood to lose, as it was easier to sign up with a different carrier than to change banks. But the arrival of a full browser on the iPhone means owners can access any HTML-based Internet banking site. "It has taken the innovative design of Apple Computers and the financial power of Google to push the juggernaut off its course and more into harmony with the wishes of mobile customers," said Hughes.
