Page 1 of 2 Given that the iPhone is now sold in 21 countries not just one, it hardly seems a fair comparison. But when you look at the populations of the countries involved, the potential market was a little over three times greater than it was when the original iPhone went on sale in the US on June 29, 2007. Another point is that in both cases people were queuing up for the first batch. The reports we've seen of the iPhone 3G launch suggest things weren't so crazy this time, with fewer people turned away empty handed. Clearly Apple did a better job of estimating demand this time, even if some of its carrier partners struggled with the rush of activations. And don't forget that there's a high level of mobile phone penetration in the countries where the iPhone 3G is being sold. In the US, it's over 80 percent, while Australia and the UK are thought to have more mobile services than people. Given that fact, and that the iPhone is a relatively high end device (especially for markets where consumers expect a reasonably good phone for 'free' when signing up for a lengthy contract), Apple's success in getting 0.1 percent of the people geographically able to buy an iPhone 3G to do so within three days doesn't seem like a bad result. Now, about those App Store downloads... please turn to page 2. |
