"Data centre managers' primary concerns used to be availability – they could not get enough redundancy," said Gordon Makryllos, country general manager of APC Pacific. "They are now focused on deploying high-density equipment, reducing carbon emissions and increasing data centre efficiency. Data centre power is difficult to manage unless there is an appropriate structure in place, hence many organisations are now looking to redesign their data centres. As a global provider of data centre infrastructure solutions, APC's expertise in all the components that make up a data centre - electrical, mechanical and structural – is a significant differentiator." He added: "We understand all aspects of data centre infrastructure and can provide a big picture view of today's data centres and those of the future. We will leverage this knowledge to design new data centres for our customers that are flexible enough to respond to current and future IT requirements." APC has also introduced APC TradeOff Tools, Web-based applications designed to assist with the early stages of data centre concept and design. According to APC, "By enabling data centre professionals to experiment with various scenarios regarding virtualisation, efficiency, power sizing, capital costs and other key design issues, APC TradeOff Tools break down major data centre planning decisions into a series of smaller, more manageable decisions. Use of these tools helps validate, through modelling, the overall design of a data centre." "Customers need to make many key decisions during any data centre project, and they do not always have the necessary information to guide them," said Makryllos. "Many of their concerns are not addressed by configuration tools because they occur early in the concept selection process. With the introduction of APC's TradeOff Tools, when a roadblock arises, the data centre decision maker can easily find a tool to deal with their specific issue, get a quick answer and continue on in the concept selection process." There are seven tools available at http://tools.apc.com : a carbon calculator, energy efficiency calculator, capital cost calculator, virtualisation energy cost calculator, power sizing calculator, an InRow containment selector and an AC vs DC calculator. |
