A news report unveils the news that the iPhone 2.0 software is finally here, giving original iPhone and iPod Touch owners the chance to upgrade and access all the App Store goodness, while giving hackers the final version of the software they need get cracking with the hacking!

Macworld in the US has unveiled the news that iPhone 2.0 is finally here.

There’s no official press release at Apple’s US website celebrating this fact as yet, but the 2.0 software’s release was essentially expected to co-incide with the iPhone 3G’s release.

Available for both existing iPhone and iPod Touch devices, Macworld says the file is 225MB in size, and that you get it through iTunes.

While Macworld doesn’t mention it, a separate download location has been available for all previous updates, so the same will likely happen with iPhone OS 2.0. Either way, you’ll need iTunes to install it, and iTunes 7.7 at that.

Update: the iPhone 2.0 firmware can be directly downloaded here - 225.1MB in size. The iPod Touch 2.0 firmware link (thru iTunes 7.7) is below.

iPod Touch owners will be charged US $9.95 to get the update due to accounting rules and regulations, with the download accessible via iTunes here, while original iPhone owners get it free of charge.

As Macworld states, the iPhone OS 2.0 comes with lots of enhancements: new languages, Asian language input, MobileMe support, Microsoft Exchange and ActiveSync support, remote wiping, Cisco IPsec VPN protocol for secure Wi-Fi connections, better email deletion and moving, and of course the App Store.

Sadly we’ll all have to wait for a future iPhone OS update before we can get things like notes synchronisation, cut and paste, better Bluetooth support (A2DP) and other desired features, although whether these will ever come is unknown.

But what’s the one big question I still have over the iPhone OS 2.0 update which I’ll definitely need answered before I dare download it? Please read on to page 2.
