But instead of coming out immediately, Steve Jobs made 22 countries wait until July 11, with an additional 48 countries (for a 2008 total of 70) have to wait even longer until “later this year” before they too can get their hands on the iPhone. Now July 11 has finally arrived, and the iPhone 3G is here, with Telstra, Optus and Vodafone finally able to officially join the iClub, although the promise of "global pricing parity" from Apple head honcho Steve Jobs appears to have fallen by the wayside. In its place have come all kinds of prices, from $0 upfront deals usually attached to a 24 month plan, through to outright purchase prices that run into the high hundreds of dollars. While the US has 24 month plans, countries like Canada get slugged with 36 month plans, the UK has 18 month plans and Australians mostly get 24 month plans, with Optus also offering a 12 month option. New Zealand was the first country to offer the iPhone 3G for sale, two hours before Australia, which resulted in the App Store needing to go online early. In Australia, Optus was first out of the gates at its Sydney CBD store - swinging open its doors at midnight to let in around 250 Apple fans who had queued up as long as 11 hours, despite a night that got colder and colder. Brett Howell, a 36-year-old call centre roster manager, began the queue about 1:15pm yesterday and became the first person in Australia to own the iPhone 3G, reports the Sydney Morning Herald. But Telstra and Vodafone didn’t go for the midnight madness option, instead preferring to open select stores from 6am on Friday to early morning iPhone 3G shoppers. Telstra is also choosing to offer the iPhone at select stores across Australia including some regional areas. This is being done in an attempt to prove its nationwide 850MHz 3.5G credentials, a frequency its competitors don’t support, although initial indications are that Telstra’s prices could well be the highest on planet Earth, potentially even outdoing the ridiculed Rogers plans in Canada, although this will be fully confirmed later this morning. So, in this exclusive midnight unboxing, what’s in the famed iPhone 3G box? To start with, the iPhone 3G comes in identical packaging to the original iPhone, with the exception of the 3G label on the side of the box. Hey, I guess if you’re onto a good thing with packaging, stick to it! The lid slides up to reveal the most hyped and anticipated gadget of the decade. It goes on sale almost exactly 12 months after the original iPhone was released in the United States. ![]() The iPhone 3G - boxed! But what else is inside? Continued on page 2. |
