Carriers hampering iPhone 3G with stingy data plans E-mail

Unless Telstra comes up with something special, it's enough to make the more cynical among us wonder if we're looking at a loose cartel designed to stop Australians from drawing the maximum benefit from the iPhone's capabilities.

Having to pay $100 for a gigabyte of data is ludicrous when 3 offers that for $15. And remember that the iPhone can't be used as a modem, so there aren't the backhaul issues that come into play when people use wireless broadband with notebook computers and start uploading large amounts of data.

Buyers need to realise they are not so much buying an iPhone 3G as signing up for one or two years mobile service. Yes, contracts can be broken at a price, but you need to think carefully before signing on the dotted line.

The refusal of Telstra and Vodafone to provide full details of their plans ahead of tomorrow's launch is unfortunate to say the least. It's almost as if they want to keep potential customers in the dark so that the keenest buyers have to pick a carrier on incomplete information. By the time anyone's had a chance to sit down and compare plans properly, there's a fair chance the first batch of iPhones will be sold out.

If your reaction is that those who rush in blindly get what they deserve, we're not going to argue.

An approach some people might have in mind is buying a prepaid iPhone 3G from Optus for $729 or $849, paying the unlocking fee (or topping up with the minimum required for free unlocking and giving the Optus SIM to granny), then signing up with 3.

What does 3 have to offer? Find out on page 4.
