Darwin residents will get their first taste of the aggressive competition in 3G mobile services that residents of other capital cities have long enjoyed: Optus has initiated coverage and opened a new retail outlet in the city.
It is the first of Optus' new look retail outlets in the Northern Territory. Mark Williamson, Optus' director, northern region said: "Optus has upgraded all its mobile sites in Darwin to offer 3G services. We are also planning to build extra sites to expand our 3G coverage in Moil, Malak, Charles Darwin Uni, Ludmilla and Darwin CBD West in the coming months."
Optus said that, over the next 18 months, areas including Dundee Downs, Adelaide River, Darwin River, Batchelor, Wagait Beach and Lake Bennet will also receive Optus 3G coverage for the first time. New sites will also be built to provide enhanced mobile and wireless broadband at Humpty Doo South, Howard Springs East, Knuckey Lagoon and Millner. These sites are expected to be built by December 2009.
