for three months ending in April 2008 the US had a total of 226 million
and Europe 224 million in total.
The actual breakdown of how people use their
handsets in terms of services and functionality makes for very
interesting reading. According to the study 23.9 percent of Americans
sent or received photos or videos (27.6 percent in Europe), 19.1
percent received SMS advertising (49.3 percent), 14.4 percent accessed
new services via phone browser (9.6 percent), 13.1 percent used email
(8.6 percent), 9.3 percent bought a ringtone (3.6 percent), 9.1 percent
played a downloaded game (8.4 percent), 7.9 percent listened to music
(18.5 percent), 6.3 percent watched video (9.1 percent), 5.2 percent
accessed social networking sites (2.9 percent) and 5.0 percent accessed
a downloaded application (3.0 percent).
