Optus plans to throw a public party for its iPhone 3G launch event at its central Sydney store, complete with food and drinks, starting at 10pm on Thursday July 10.Featured Whitepaper

The weather forecast for Sydney is for a fine but windy evening, with a minimum temperature of 7 degrees Celsius. Giveaways (we're not expecting free iPhones!) and entertainment are also promised, along with the traditional midnight countdown - at which point the iPhone will finally go on sale in Australia. But it seems that only existing Optus customer that paid a deposit (that hasn't been returned to them) will be going home with iPhones. Everyone else will have to wait until normal business hours on Friday (unless they can find a 'yes' shop that opens early at 7am), assuming stocks last. The midnight event will take place outside the Optus 'yes' shop on the corner of George and Hunter Streets in Sydney's central business district. According to The Age, Optus will be sharing the love north and south of the border, with Friday morning events at Chadstone (suburban Melbourne) and Brisbane CBD. What about the other carriers?
