A leading Apple user group has lambasted Australian mobile carriers for failing to provide clear information about their iPhone 3G plans ahead of the launch. The user group has accused the carriers of "corporate-managed confusion, obfuscation and lack of transparency" regarding their iPhone 3G plans.

The iPhone 3G, which goes on sale on July 11, will be sold by Telstra, Optus and Vodafone in Australia, with a fourth carrier 3 pleading to be let on to the bandwagon.

"The telcos have brought out overly complex, confusing plans in the case of Optus, or have offered limited information on their plans as in the case of Telstra who have yet to release rates for iPhone data usage, and Vodaphone must still be working their spreadsheets as we've heard nothing from them with just a few days to go. The very first 3G Australian telco, 3 which is very popular with under 25s, is still to reach any agreement with Apple," said Les Posen, president of iMug, a professionally-oriented Apple user group based in Melbourne but with members around Australia.

One of the big selling points of the iPhone is its internet connectivity, with a web browser that can handle regular pages thanks to a zoom capability rather than requiring special cut-down versions of sites. Despite the iPhone being responsible for a boom in mobile internet use, that actual amounts of data involved seem quite small - it's not that iPhone users get through huge amounts of data, more that owners of other handsets use so little.

Depending on who you ask, the typical US iPhone owner reportedly gets through around 250M of data per month. One user poll suggested over 80 percent of owners use less than 400M per month. Either way, that's not very much when you consider that AT&T has been offering unlimited use.

But that could change with the 3G version - find out why on page 2.
