After eaten the citrulline is converted to a natural amino acid called arginine. The arginine then causes blood vessels to relax, producing better circulation, which is just like the reaction that the artificially-made drug Viagara causes in the male body. The researchers contend that men who have erectile dysfunction could be helped by eating watermelon. Dr. Bhimu Patel is with the Fruit and Vegetable Improvement Center , Department of Horticultural Sciences, Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, U.S.A. Arginine boosts nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels, the same basic effect that Viagra has, to treat erectile dysfunction and maybe even prevent it." He continues, "Watermelon may not be as organ specific as Viagra but it's a great way to relax blood vessels without any drug side-effects." According to the researchers, the citrulline, the Viagra-like natural substance, is found in larger quantities in the rind of the watermelon than in its flesh.
