The Aspire One will come in four colours, Sapphire Blue, Seashell White, Coral Pink and Golden Brown.

The specs are as follows:

The processor is the Intel Atom processor N270 running at (1.60GHz, 533MHz, 512KB L2 Cache), with the Mobile Intel 945GSE Chipset (DDR2 400/533MHz)

The OS is either Linpus Linux or XP Home.

The screen is an 8.9" WSVGA High-Brightness LED Backlight Widescreen Display, supporting a 1024 x 600 pixel resolution

Up to 1.5GB of DDR2 SDRAM running at 533MHz can be installed.

If you’re using the Linpus Linux version, you’ll have an 8GB Flash drive installed, while Windows XP users get a much larger 120GB hard drive.

There’s a dedicated SD card reader for storage expansion, something that’s quite handy, and there’s also an additional 5-in-1 card reader which takes SD, MMC, MS, MS Pro and xD cards.

You’ll find 3 USB 2.0 slots adorning the computer, a VGA port, a headphone socket, microphone socket and an Ethernet port.

802.11 b/g Wi-Fi is built-in, as are two speakers and a built-in microphone, along with a 1.3 megapixel “Crystal Eye” webcam. There’s also a socket for an upcoming optional 3G module.

The dimensions are 249 (W) x 170 (D) x 29 (H) mm and the weight of the Linux version with a 3-cell battery is 985 grams, rising to 1.1kg for the Windows XP version thanks to the 120GB hard drive and additional memory.

The Australian warranty is a 1 year courier pickup and return warranty, and this can be extended to 3 years by paying Acer an additional AUD $100.

All up, the Aspire One is shaping up to be a feisty competitor to the Asus Eee PC 901 series and all the other models with more memory on the XP version, a larger hard drive and a slightly bigger keyboard.

If the Acer Aspire One proves to be a wildly popular unit, Asus may have to respond with better pricing. Either way, the consumer is the winner, which is just how it’s supposed to be.
