On the negative side, Lassek and Gaulin found that the more omega-6 fatty acids (formally called n-6 fatty acids) that the girls consumed versus omega-3, the less they scored on the cognitive tests.

In other words, the more omega-6 consumed over omega-3, the less the brain develops within girls.

The two researchers did not find that the intelligence of boys were affected in the same way—they did not seem to be adversely affected by consuming more omega-6 over omega-3.

The two researchers presented their conclusions at the twentieth annual meeting of the Human Behavior and Evolution Society (HBES), which was held in Kyoto, Japan, between June 4-8, 2008.

The New Scientist article also states that the average U.S. citizen consumes about ten times more omega-6 than omega-3.

The article continues to explain that such huge amounts of omega-6 negate any positive effects of omega-3 within the human body.

The article in New Scientist is found at "Omega-3s are twice as important for girls as boys ." A subscription is required for the full article.
