30 years on and Space Invaders is back!

Space Invaders changed gaming history when it was first launched as an arcade game back in 1978. 30 years on, it has returned and is just as playable as ever - if a bit more pocket friendly in all regards... Yes, it is true, Space Invaders is both 30 years old this year, and it is back in the shops. Available for the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP consoles, this 30th anniversary tribute is called Space Invaders Extreme . Quite often, attempting to update a classic game such as this is doomed to failure. Just like a boy band attempting to cover a rock classic, there is an almost inevitable dilution of its very soul. At best you end up with a pale imitation of the original, at worse a comedic travesty that really isn't funny at all. However, it seems Taito have got Space Invaders Extreme pretty much spot on if the reviewers are to be believed. Yes, that's right, I said Taito. Anyone hovering around 40 years of age territory who played the original in the arcades will have the Taito brand burned into their psyche. yes, this is that rare but happy happening where the original developers are responsible for the remake. Extremely rare, in this case, considering the amount of time that passed. Of course, the development company might be the same, but nobody is suggesting the same team has worked on both versions!
