Page 2 of 3 According to Telstra officials, the plans are "specially designed" but there's practically no clues about exactly what they will include. But Next G's existing $100 plan offered with smartphones provides $90 of voice calls at 22c per 30 seconds and 27c flagfall, plus $10 of data at $2 per megabyte. That's just 5M of data per month! There's no indication of outright pricing or prepaid offers. "Australians are very excited about iPhone 3G and we're delighted to bring this product to them on Telstra's high-speed Next G network," said David Moffatt, Telstra's consumer group managing director. "With iPhone 3G on the country's largest and fastest 3G network, providing coverage to 99 percent of the population, more Australians will enjoy the iPhone 3G experience in even more places." Well yes, but that enjoyment will only happen if Telstra gets the data content of the iPhone plans right. Something comparable to 3's 1G for $15 per month seems like the minimum it should be offering, but that's 200 times the volume for 1.5 times the notional price of the data content of Telstra's current smartphone plan. After all, Australia is shaping up to be the world's most competitive iPhone market with Telstra, Optus and Vodafone all offering iPhones from July 11, and the fourth mobile carrier - 3 - petitioning Apple to join them. And does that upfront price sound right to you? I smell a rat - read on to find out why. |
