The Asus EAH4800 series of cards are designed with DirectX games in mind, and the large amount of onboard memory is intended to to keep the ATI Radeon HD 4850 GPU supplied with data for smooth gameplay or playback of high-def video content. The PC gaming market is estimated to be in the region of $US3 billion for 2008. Three models of Asus' new card are available. The EAH4850/HTDI/1GB uses the Radeon HD 4850 GPU running at 625MHz and costs $A349. If that's a bit rich, the EAH4850/HTDI/512M has the same specifications apart from halving the onboard memory. But if you've got money to burn, $429 buys the EAH4870/HTDI/512M featuring the faster (750MHz) Radeon HD 4870 GPU - but again, only 512M of RAM. The cards are fitted with the Glaciator Fansink, said to keep the GPU up to seven degrees centigrade cooler than board using the ATI reference design, while maintaining quiet operation (25dB). Other common features include 2560 x 1600 maximum resolution, two DVI-I interfaces, a component (YPbPr) interface and cable, and DVI to D-Sub and DVI to HDMI adaptors.
