We've become used to notebooks and mobile phones being recalled due to battery problems leading to overheating and in a very few cases fires, but a recall of PC speaker systems on safety grounds seems a new one to us. Unfortunately for speakers manufacturer Logitech, one of its models happens to be in the firing line.

The product concerned is the Logitech R-20 2.1 Speakers, product number 83672. According to the voluntary electrical safety recall, "the speakers are found to be faulty and there may be a risk of fire occurring if the speakers are used."

It has been sold by Australia Post since March 22, 2008, and was promoted in Australia Post's April and June catalogues.

Anyone who has purchased these speakers, or has received a set as a gift, should stop using them immediately.

They may be returned to Australia Post for a full refund.

Further information is available by calling 13 13 18.

In fact, this isn't the first time PC speakers have been recalled. Back in 1999, the speakers sold with the Philips E833 and E873 desktop systems between 1997 and 1998 were recalled due to a potential short circuit.

And Philips was implicated again when its HKA-12100ECD-230 power adaptors sold with HP P1534A external amplified speaker sets between 2000 and 2002 were found to have an ungrounded cord, posing a potential shock hazard.
