After the July 1st deadline, NASA will consider each applicant. Evaluations and interviews will be conducted.

In early 2009, the final group will be announced. These lucky individuals will be the 2009 Astronaut Class. Many astronauts have been doctors, scientists, pilots, and schoolteachers. They come from a diverse educational background.

Members of the 2009 class will have basic astronaut training as their first assignment. Training will be conducted at the Johnson Space Center, in Houston, Texas, during the summer of 2009.

Additional information about the Astronaut Candidate Program is available at Recruit Astronauts.

NASA ends its employment ad with the slogan: “NASA HAS SPACE FOR YOU!”

The first group of NASA astronauts (the “Original Seven”) was selected in 1959. These men, all pilots, were from the military services.

So far, only 321 astronauts have been selected out of thousands of applications. The 2009 astronaut group will be the twentieth group selected.

NASA states, “The astronauts of the 21st century will help lead NASA through the next steps of its Vision for Space Exploration as we explore the Moon, Mars, and beyond.”
