All the tariffs will include unlimited browsing, unlimited Wi-Fi access, visual voice mail and reduced roaming rates with the O2 International Traveller Service.

The catch, as always, is an 18 month minimum contract term. To escape it you need to look to the Apple Store and a Pay-As-You-Go version of the handset. No credit checks and no complex contracts to be sorted. This might sound like the most obvious option to get hold of an iPhone 3G in the UK fuss free.

Indeed, it could be. As long as your pockets are as deep as your desire to get the gadget is hot. Neither Apple nor O2 are saying how much a PAYG iPhone 3G will cost, but do not expect it to be cheap.

Even after you have factored in the cost of that O2 contract across its minimum term, there will probably end up being quite a chasm of cost assuming you are actually going to want to use the handset to its full capability. 3G mobile broadband on a PAYG basis has never been cheap for a normal handset, let alone a God Phone on steroids...
