LG’s “Secret” to beating the iPhone? E-mail

Other stats are that it weighs 116g, has 260hrs of standby time, 229 minutes of talk time, 129 minutes of video talk time, has a 2.4” QVGA (320x240) 262,000 colour TFT screen and does SMS/MMS/video MMS.

It also has an FM radio, speakerphone, PIM (organiser), plays DiVX files up to 640x480 and the other previously mentioned features like Bluetooth, MicroSD, document viewer and more.

While the phone has Java, I don’t think there’ll be a flood of applications to download and install beyond games. The phone is meant to be a fashion phone that has elements of the cool things the iPhone can do, without trying to be a super mini computer as well as a phone, music player, camera, video recorder etc.

Quite how successful the LG Secret will be up against an expected US $199 8GB iPhone 3G is yet to be seen.

Clearly anyone who actually gets this phone will be impressed and has a lot of features to play with, should they wish to use those features, and they all appear to be quite straightforward to use, with the appeal of a touch screen for selecting things on screen, and a physical numeric keypad to enter numbers and text.

It’s all going to come down to price and marketing. LG’s Secret is definitely a cool and fashionable phone, but is it cooler than the iPhone? No, the iPhone is in a space all its own, even with some of its features not being as good as the LG Secret, like the 5 megapixel camera, the VGA video recording mode and YouTube upload for videos.

Does it really make any difference if Chris Noth (Mr Big) or Jennifer Hawkins like this phone? No, not really.

But for plenty of people its capabilities will be more than enough, more than most will probably even ever use.

Looking to see the success of phones sold by the end of 2008 will be a very interesting exercise indeed now that the iPhone 3G will be so fiercely competing around the world.

One thing’s for sure: if LG wants to sell a lot of phones this year, it mustn’t keep any of them a secret, because winning against the iPhone and its word of mouth marketing campaign will mean a lot of marketing is needed.

Mr Big is a good step in the right marketing direction, but for that to work he’ll need to make more than one appearance at the launch party, so just how much marketing is done, and how this helps the phone actually sell to consumers will indeed be fascinating to watch.
