The HTC Touch Diamond: a true iPhone 3G killer? E-mail

There is a 3.2 megapixel camera with an optical auto-focus that certainly betters that of the 2-megapixel iPhone, but there’s still no LED or Xenon Flash for better night-time photos.

Only 4GB of storage is contained within, a memory capacity the iPhone ditched late last year, and there’s no 3.5mm headphone socket: you’ll have to use the mini-USB socket instead, which is a tremendous shame.

There’s no MicroSD slot either, so once you’ve filled that 4GB of space and want to add more digital media, it’s a deletin’ you will go to make some space.

There is GPS and A-GPS included within, however, matching the iPhone 3G in that regard, as well as an FM radio, stylus, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi b/g, a removable battery and Windows Mobile 6.1.

One mighty shock is the price. There are no US $199 or $299 price points here, but a massive AUD $999 worth of sticker shock, and an $80 per month plan over two years to contend with, which comes to a minimum AUD $1920 – and that’s not including the $999 price!. Actually the $80 per month includes the phone, which then comes at a $0 upfront price. My mistake, as a reader pointed out, which I've now corrected.

So, all up two years of use plus the phone itself will set you back a minimum of AUD $1920, but the $80 per month phone plan doesn’t make mention, as far as we can tell for now, of any included data, so if you wish to use some of that HSDPA 7.2Mbps download speed goodness, be prepared to pay even more.

Indeed, the press release states that the minimum cost is AUD $1920 for the phone plan, plus usage, which is listed as “incl. any applicable browsing and content”, so if you want to download music, surf the web, watch Mobile Foxtel or more, it will cost extra, as it does with any other Telstra phone today.

No real surprises there, of course, but it certainly does make you wonder just how much data Optus, Vodafone and presumably Telstra will offer with the iPhone 3G as part of the plan.

So from here, without even yet knowing the voice and data plan costs of the iPhone 3G from either Optus or Vodafone, the iPhone is looking set to be a much cheaper device to run due to what is assumed to be an included amount of data in the monthly plan price, which you'll need to pay extra for on any other mobile phone.

The battle of the super-smart phones has just moved up a notch for all players with the introduction of the HTC Touch Diamond, and girls can’t exclusively claim diamonds are their best friend anymore either: geeks can now say it too.

But just like a real diamond doesn’t come cheap, the outright cost of the HTC isn't cheap either.

So while we don't yet know what the true upfront cost of the iPhone 3G will be, we do know you can get the HTC Touch Diamond, on a 24 month plan, at a $0 upfront price.
