Page 2 of 2 The answer to that question is around 14 hours away as I write this article. If Telstra CEO Sol Trujillo announces that Telstra will indeed sell the iPhone 3G, a lot of the focus will immediately switch to iPhone questions, none of which are likely to be answered on the day itself, as Telstra likely wants to see what Optus and Vodafone decide to charge for the iPhone and the accompanying voice and data plans. Of course, given the expectation that Telstra will indeed make an announcement, questions about the iPhone are inevitable, but if there is no announcement made, any iPhone questions will be likely met with some kind of simple, or perhaps elaborate, “no comment”. If Telstra doesn’t announce the iPhone, there will undoubtedly be disappointment, but the focus will shift to what else is in the T[Life] store, the other phones on display, the store layout, staff and facilities. All of that would be focused on anyway whether Telstra announces the iPhone or not, especially as Telstra likely wouldn’t have any iPhone 3Gs for the media to see. And the announcement of the iPhone 3G – or the lack of an announcement – will be part of any stories tomorrow about the T[Life] store opening. Telstra may decide to make us all wait a bit longer before confirming whether it really is selling the iPhone or not in the hope media coverage will focus more on the T[Life] store, perhaps just to tease us all a bit further, and keep Optus and Vodafone also guessing. So... we’ll just have to wait and see. Either way, the T[Life] store opening will be a grand event, and is doing a lot all its own to help revolutionise retailing for the 21st century. Sadly the store opening won’t make Telstra’s prices any cheaper, but if it helps to give consumers a better opportunity to properly try before they buy, have problems solved and provide a proper learning environment for anyone that wants to take advantage of what will presumably be free lessons, that’s a good thing for consumers, and one other companies should also blatantly copy and be inspired by. Yet despite all that, the question of whether Telstra will indeed sell the iPhone 3G is what will be uppermost in the minds of the media in attendance, and if there is no announcement, the media will definitely be wondering when that announcement will be made. So, there'll be more tomorrow after the store opens, and what Telstra's answers are if no iPhone is announced, as there will definitely be media questions as to why, from me if no-one else!!
