PCs pass 1 billion in 2008; to double by 2014 E-mail

Thus, future growth of PCs is expected to occur in emerging markets where most of the population is located and where PCs are still not commonly used.

In fact, the number of PCs in these emerging countries are expected a double over the next eight years. Thus, they were introduced in the mid-1970s, took over thirty-five years to reach one billion, and are projected to double to two billion in numbers in only eight years.

Gartner research vice-president Luis Anavitarte states, “Whereas mature markets accounted for just under 60 percent of the first billion installed PCs, we expect emerging markets to account for approximately 70 percent of the next billion installed PCs."

Anavitarte adds, Emerging market governments are also increasingly committed to reducing the digital divide by promoting PC use among their citizens through a variety of means, including providing PCs directly to the less affluent.” [USA Today: “One Billion PCs In Use”]
