Page 4 of 4 There are third party programs for hacked iPhones that enable MMS. There’s even some email services in the US that let you send an email with photo, which then has the photo squished and sent as an MMS to your original intended recipient. Heck, most smartphones – and even basic phones – can be easily set up to access Gmail. Send a photo via the iPhone’s email software to someone’s Gmail account, and they can look at that on their phone, and the photo too. All for less than 50c! So, no MMS capability isn’t such a big deal. When was the last time you sent a photo or video clip to someone? Sure, some readers will do it all the time. But if you and your mates all get iPhones, well, you’ll just be emailing photos instead. It’ll be harder to send video clips, but that capability will come too. It’s just a matter of time. Then we have disappointment number 7 of “no voice dialling”. Yep, the iPhone, a mini computer, can’t do voice dialling. That is a shame. The biggest use for it is to dial numbers when you’re driving, so you don’t have to handle your phone, which is a no-no in the car. But as a mini computer with the ability to run third party programs once the App Store is up and running, what’s the bet someone creates a voice dialling application? Yes, Apple should have made this functionality a standard feature, too. Perhaps they’re even working on it for a future iPhone firmware update. Talking on the phone in your car is dangerous, even with a hands-free, but many people have managed to do it safely enough. So hopefully an enterprising programmer figures this feature out, or Apple includes it in a future version. So, the 7 iPhone disappointments aren’t really all that disappointing after all. Yes, some will rely on third party software when they’re standard features elsewhere. But the iPhone’s stellar ease of use and gorgeous interface puts most other phones to shame. I’d rather an iPhone with some missing features that does all it's work beautifully, in such an easy to use manner that complete novices can not only master it quickly but figure it out for themselves as well, rather than a do-it-all phone that only does a few things well and the rest kinda so-so, with you needing to pull out the manual to figure it all out anyway! The iPhone will also see a quality software explosion that will put third party programs on other phones – and even some on computers – to shame, as it has already done. And the way the iPhone does things is causing competing phone manufacturers to “think different”, creating better phones of their own, which is no disappointment at all. The iPhone 3G is nearly here, and will soon be in 70 countries around the world, on an official basis. Disappointed? Nah, I’m ecstatic! And if you’re still disappointed, well... don’t buy it. No-one’s forcing you to, and the latest batch of phones from Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, LG, HTC and others are all pretty cool, too, meaning there’s something out there for everyone, whatever your taste. Even luddites can keep themselves happy... by remaining phone-free. My biggest disappointment about the iPhone? That it wasn’t invented earlier!
