7 iPhone disappointments? Really? E-mail

Next up is the disappointment number 4 of “no video recording”. Yep, it’s true. The world’s coolest digital device can’t record video. Or at least, it can’t record video out of the box. But... anyone with a hacked iPhone knows that you can download a demo video recording app, and you can buy it if you really want it for a few dollars.

Given that the iPhone is shortly getting an “App Store” to download what will surely end up being tens of thousands of programs, a video recording program will surely be on that list very soon. There’ll probably be several to choose from, and someone might even decide to make one free.

So, if recording video clips on your iPhone is that important that you simply MUST have this feature, it’s not only already available for hacked iPhones, but it’s surely coming to the App Store soon. Yes, it’s a shame you’ll have to pay for it, when clearly it can be done and Apple could have given the ability away free.

But the fact it’s clearly coming to anyone that has a few spare dollars to pay for it means that it’s not that disappointing after all.

Then comes disappointment (and mambo) number 5 of “no cut and paste”. Now, I’ll happily admit this could be a very useful feature for Apple to implement. A clever programmer has already figured out a way to do it, and there are videos online that mock up how it could be done.

This means that it will probably become available as, you guessed it, a third party program you can download. Apple is probably working on a way to do copy and paste for a future version of the iPhone software too, although they’ve given no sign that they are.

I haven’t really needed cut and paste on the iPhone with the original version I’ve had since August 2007. The handful of times I could have used it, sure, it was a bit annoying.

But it’s life, and it’s something a third party programmer will fix, or Apple will offer in the future. So yeah, this one’s a bit annoying. But it’s not a deal breaker.

The sixth disappointment is no MMS (multimedia messaging service). This is the ability to send a photo you’ve taken with your phone to another phone for something like 50c a pop. A nice 2 megapixel or better photo horribly squished down in size to send as a multimedia message.

Yes, MMS also lets you record some audio, a short video clip, and even make a little slideshow on phones. But MMS message traffic is dwarfed by regular text messaging. A lot of people have no real idea how to send a photo or video message anyway.

The reason why no MMS isn't a disappointment, the last disappointment and my final thoughts are continued on page 4!
