The TiVo PVR revolution has taken years to come to Australia, but two online reports say it’s coming next month at last, for AUD $700 and with no monthly subscription fees.

The TiVo is the most famous personal video recorder (PVR) in the US, with the best on-screen software for navigating an electronic program guide and selecting programs to record, an easy to use remote control and other consumer friendly features that have made it a winner.

Some of those include a “Season Pass” facility which will automatically record every episode from a TV series, excluding repeats and capturing each episode in full, even if the TV network decides to go over that program’s advertised end time.

We can’t forget one of the most famous features of all, which is pausing and rewinding live TV. Of course we’re familiar with that these days in Australia through a plethora of other modern TV recording devices, but it’s still an awesome feature.

But it’s naturally not all. TiVo’s software can also automatically make recommendations for shows based on what you’ve previously recorded, while also letting you search through an electronic program guide using keywords, so you can immediately see if there are any movies on this week based on the name of your favourite actor, genre and more.

Australia’s first TiVo will come with twin HDTV tuners, letting you record two separate channels while watching another, and comes with enough space to store 20 hours of HDTV or 180 hours of standard definition programming.

On the back is the expected HDMI socket, and there’s even an eSATA socket so you can easily add more hard disk storage, something that is definitely a consumer friendly feature.

The Gadget Guy site says TiVo will be available to purchase online from July 15, 2008 and will be in Harvey Norman stores to purchase from July 28, 2008, although Current.com.au says sales will start at Harvey Norman from July 1.

All of this is so the TiVo is available to purchase before the Olympic Games starts on the 8th of August, 2008, with the Olympics being broadcast by Channel 7, and with Channel 7 the main promoter of TiVo in Australia.

The Australian Financial Review (AFR) is reporting that the first three months of in-store TiVo sales – which encompasses the Olympic Games timeframe, will be exclusively handled by Harvey Noman stores across Australia.

Harvey Norman is reported to have paid AUD $5.5 million to be an Olympic sponsor, and clearly hopes to sell tens of thousands of TiVo boxes through its stores in that timeframe, piggybacking on massive coverage by Channel 7 and heavy promotion of the TiVo’s unique capabilities.
