Whether TiVo will really catch on in Australia is yet to be seen, but at least it does come with the advantage of no monthly charges, something that can’t be said for Foxtel, but can be said for devices such as hard disk based DVD/Blu-ray recorders.

Given that more people spend time on computers than watching TV, given the rise of purchases of TV programming on DVD in individual series and given the propensity of some to illegally download the latest TV shows, there are a lot of things fighting against TiVo’s success.

But TiVo’s strength lies in its software, sitting there are pre-recording what you want, or things it thinks you want, so you’ll always have something you’re interested in watching ready to go.

The TiVo box can also happily sit alongside an existing Foxtel IQ box, as it gives you the ability to record even more shows from free-to-air to watch when you want, and leaving the Foxtel box ready to record Foxtel channels.

So... TiVo arrives at last. It’s taken years and years, and it’s getting a big kick along from the fact an Olympics is about to happen.

It’s also Channel 7’s entree into a world of selling downloadable TV shows, movies and competition with pay TV provider Foxtel, and as such arrives with much fanfare and fireworks.

You can be certain that Foxtel will put it on the must-see list of TV competitors to monitor, while another Channel 7 Olympics sponsor, Panasonic, with its launch of the first Blu-ray hard disk recorder in Australia, will also be keeping a close eye too.

Does the TiVo tempt you? Or are you a Windows Media fan? Perhaps you’ve already purchased a Blu-ray recorder? Or does your VCR still blink 12:00? Let us know!
