Remember Earth Hour? Back in March this year when we switched off all our lights and electrical equipment at home, except the fridge, oh and the Plasma TV because the football was on.  Well a new campaign to return some power to the grid is ready to launch.  Computers Off Australia wants us to lift our fingers a little at home time.

Hands up those that at least switch their monitors off before heading home from a desk bound career?  Keep your hand up if you could and do power down your PC to [at least] Stand By at the same time.

Hmmmm not many hands up.  According to a Gartner Report the global Information and Communications Technology industry (ICT) accounts for approximately 2% of global carbon dioxide emissions, which is equivalent to the emissions of the aviation industry!

Of course much of this is not related to simply shutting down home/business computers when not in use, but like the Earth Hour initiative, you have to start somewhere.

Another report produced by the Australian Department of Environment and Water Heritage puts the total number of PC’s in use within government departments, institutions, businesses and Aussie homes at 24 million.

The report estimates that shutting down these machines when not in use could save AU$1.3 billion and 7,923,926 tonnes of carbon emissions per annum.

This is the equivalent of taking 1,373,517 cars off the road.  A nice thought for one who struggles to work through the traffic on a push bike each day.

It also equates to the planting of 2,165,260 trees and 8,882,715 homes that would be lit for a year by the energy saved by turning on power management on our home and work computers. (at 12c electricity cost per kWh).
