Two psychology studies have found three common personality traits that assure the “bad boys” usually get the girls over the “nice guys.” One of the researchers commented that James Bond (fictional British agent 007) is the king of the bad boys.

The three personality traits found in these bad boys—what psychologists call the “dark triad”—are an obsession with:

1. “Narcissism” (excessive self-admiration, a personality disorder characterized by an exaggerated self-estimation of one’s appearance and abilities)

2. “Impulsive, thrill-seeking, and callous behavior” (a personality disorder found within psychopaths, those with aggressive, violent, and antisocial behaviors—without thoughts of remorse)

3. “Deceitful and exploitative” (cunning and unscrupulous behavior in order to achieve any goal, often called Machiavellian behavior by the psychological community)

Although by looking at the definition of these three characteristic, one might wonder why women would be attracted to these men.

However, history has shown, and now science has proven, that women often look for these three traits, along with masculinity, as the best way to produce healthy children or, at least, to have the thrill of a quick affair.

Humans are animals, however hard we try to distant ourselves. And, generally the most aggressive male animal usually win out, both in war and reproduction/sex/lust/love..., when it comes to winning the heart of his lady fair, if even for an afternoon.

American experimental social pyschologist Peter K. Jonason (Department of Psychology, New Mexico State University, Las Cruces), the lead researcher in the study, stated with respect to individuals who possess these traits and their sex lives, "We have some evidence that the three traits are really the same thing and may represent a successful evolutionary strategy." [New Scientist (subscription required): "Bad guys really do get the most girls"]

How did Johason determine these traits are in the bad guys rather than inside the nice guys? Please read on.
