Asus celebrates the Eee PC as “the world’s easiest PC”, and certainly pre-loaded with Xandros Linux, that’s true, turning the Eee PC into the most appliance-like computer available.

Asus calls their battery saving mode the “Super Hybrid Engine” – which sounds like it should be inside a Toyota Prius – and comes with Bluetooth, 802.11 b/g/draft-N wireless, 1GB of RAM, a 1.3 megapixel camera, “Pearl White” or “Shine Black” casing, an 8.9-inch screen, SD card reader, USB ports... but the same “smaller” sized keyboard that people have nevertheless gotten used to.

The display runs at 1024x600 resolution, meaning it’s much friendlier to read web pages with and write documents, with Asus saying you can “view a single A4 page” without scrolling left or right – although you’ll obviously need to scroll up and down to see the page in its entirely, as you have to on most computers today, larger screen size or no.

Instead of charging a different price for the Windows or Linux models, they’re both priced at AUD $649 inc GST, which is a refreshing change from previous models that had two different price points.

Sadly the Windows version still only comes with a total of 12GB of solid state storage (split into 4GB on board and an 8GB internal memory module), as opposed to the 20GB of solid state storage on the Linux model (split into 4GB and 16GB).

So while the cost is the same, the Windows tax, which must be paid, means 8GB less memory.

In addition, the size of the Eee PC 901 is 22.5cm(W) x 17.5cm(D) x 2.2cm to 3.9cm(H) and its weight is 1.1kg.

But with the new Eee 901 comes price drops for the older models – the Eee PC 900 for both the Linux and Windows versions falls in price to AUD $549, while the original Eee PC 701 in both OS flavours falls to AUD $479.

So, what about the Asus Eee 1000 that has been released overseas? What’s different and special about it, and how much will it cost? And how much bigger and heavier is it? Please read on to page 3.
