Science DiscussionsAccording to the NASA press release “NASA and Disney invite kids to explore space with WALL-E,” NASA and Disney have signed a Space Act Agreement to promote a series of educational and public outreach activities for the new Disney-Pixar movie “WALL-E.” See the movie trailer and many other exciting things on Apple’s website, “WALL-E”.
The collaboration by Disney, Pixar, and NASA is naturally drawn by the similarities between the movie WALL-E and what NASA does on a daily basis in its quest to explore the universe. The storyline for WALL-E involves such technologies as robotics, propulsion systems, and astrophysics.
NASA uses these technologies, and many more, in their mission to “pioneer the future in space exploration, scientific discovery and aeronautics research.” WALL-E opens in movie theatres on June 27, 2008. The science-fiction movie is set 700 years in the future. WALL-E is short for “Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth Class.”
According to Disney management, “WALL-E is the story of the last little robot on Earth. He is a robot and his programming was to help clean up. You see, it's set way in the future. Through consumerism, rampant, unchecked consumerism, the Earth was covered with trash. And to clean up, everyone had to leave Earth and set in place millions of these little robots that went around to clean up the trash and make Earth habitable again.” |
