Sony Ericsson unveils C905 Cyber-shot phone – with 8.1 megapixel camera! E-mail

It’s not just an 8.1 megapixel camera phone with a real Xenon flash, it also comes equipped with A-GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a 2GB memory card and more. It’s Sony Ericsson’s best camera phone yet – but does it beat the Nokia N96?

Unveiled at CommunicAsia, a yearly phone-fest held in Singapore, Sony Ericsson’s (SE) C905 comes with some impressive features, with the standout being an 8.1 megapixel camera with Xenon flash.

Although SE have had a Xenon flash in its flagship Cyber-shot branded camera phones for at least a couple of generations now, taking phone photography to 8.1 megapixels immediately puts it ahead of the competition, most of whom are still at the 5 megapixel level – if that.

Of course, true camera aficionados will question whether the small sensor size on a camera phone really lets a 8.1 megapixels truly deliver a better picture than a 5 megapixel camera.

Sadly we’re going to have to wait until we see side-by-side photos taken with an SE C905 and a camera phone such as the Xenon flash equipped 5 megapixel N82 with Carl Zeiss lens, available today, or the similarly equipped N96, due later this year at around the same time as the C905 will hit the market.

Frustratingly, SE’s “spec sheet” for the C905 doesn’t yet give enough details. While blogs on the Internet claim the C905 can record video at 640x480, SE’s own spec sheet simply doesn’t offer this information.

If it can, it’s a welcome improvement from previous SE camera phones which recorded at a much lower resolution despite have 3.2 and 5 megapixel cameras, putting those older models at a disadvantage when it came to competing with the Nokia N95 or the N82.

So, here’s hoping that it does indeed record video at the standard definition television resolution 640x480 at 30fps (frames per second), at least matching the N95, N82 and N96 in this regard.

Equally sadly is the fact that a TV out cable won’t be coming as standard in the box with the C905. Called the “TV-Out Cable ITC-60”, it’s listed as an ‘optional extra’ which you’ll need to purchase. Nokia's N95 and N82 have this cable as standard.

What’s also missing is a standard 3.5mm headphone socket. Honestly, this should be standard on every phone capable of multimedia – in the year 2008 it’s not good enough that we need to use ‘dongles’ or whatnot to attach a regular pair of headphones to a multimedia phone.

So, what GOOD things can we say about the C905 at this early stage? And what else is in the package? Please read on to page 2.
