Foxtel are all excited, but I’m sure that most TV viewers won’t really care, and will simply be more interested in what TV programming is now available in HD, what isn’t and how much the damned thing will cost. Consumers will also be wondering if they can afford it in an environment of rising food, petrol and living costs.

But hey, even Foxtel is getting more expensive, so at least it’s following the trend.

Anyway, for those that do care about advertising campaigns which can be quickly forgotten anyway, unless they really are memorable, Foxtel says that “the television spot celebrates Australian entertainment history with the commencement of television, the transition to colour TV, the first remote control, watching a video at home, the move to DVDs, the birth of subscription television and introduction of FOXTEL’s innovative products including the FOXTEL iQ and the new FOXTEL iQ2. “

Foxtel will be pushing hard for you to stump up the cash for HD programming, saying that: “The ‘Wonders will never cease’ television campaign will include a further three spots describing the key benefits of FOXTEL HD+ – the exclusive programming, easy to use technology, and excellent customer care.”

Excellent customer care. Hey, for a possible maximum total (not including any additional HD movies you might want to watch) of AUD $130+ per month, you’d better want to “excellent customer care” to be part of the package if you’re having any issues.

Anyway, Foxtel’s marketing campaign will emphasise that “FOXTEL HD+ will raise the benchmark in quality television by delivering exclusive programming, easy to use technology, and excellent customer care” with “stunningly beautiful HD pictures and immersive surround sound”.

They say they’ll devlier: “The widest possible choice of High Definition programs with five dedicated 24/7 HD channels BBC HD, Discovery HD, National Geographic Channel HD, FOX SPORTS HD and ESPN HD”.

“Australian television premiere blockbuster movies available immediately when you want them through the FOXTEL Box Office HD On Demand service”.

“Innovative technology through the new FOXTEL iQ2 disk drive set-top-unit”.

“An unparalleled level of customer service and support, including a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects on the FOXTEL iQ2.”

So, if you want pay TV in a sharper looking format, for at least a few channels to start with (and more promised) AND you have a high definition TV and money to burn each month, Foxtel HD+ is standing by to take your money and send you in a world of high definition. At last!
