That said, iPhone Atlas was told by a Vodafone employee that "The phone is locked down like no phone has ever been."

The comment that "At this stage, you can’t jailbreak it and you can’t hardware unlock it" doesn't mean too much at this stage, as practically nobody would have had an opportunity to try. All you can read into that statement is that the methods used on the original model won't work.

Unless you're really desperate, it would seem prudent to wait and see exactly how much an 'official' iPhone 3G will cost you.

Furthermore, it seems that US buyers will have to enter into a contract with AT&T at the time of purchase, and this may stem the supply of 3G models to the grey market. So don't count on picking up a cheap unlocked iPhone 3G during your next holiday or business trip to Asia.
