Page 2 of 3 The BWU200S burner writes to 50GB and 25GB BD-R (write once) discs, BD-RE (re-writeable discs), 8.5GB Dual-layer DVD+R/-R discs, 4.7GB single layer DVD+R/+RW/-R/-RW/-RAM, and CD-R/-RW discs. Sony also says it’s great for computer backup and data storage, but is this really true? Taking at look at the Sony Style online story at www.sony.com.au we can see that a 25GB BD-R (write once) disc costs AUD $24.95, while a 25GB BD-RE (re-writeable) disc costs $29.95. Buy yourself a 50GB BD-R and you’ll pay $59.95, while a re-writeable 50GB BD-RE will set you back $89.95. But if you go to OfficeWorks, you can pay AUD $109 for a 160GB Western Digital 2.5-inch hard drive in a smooth small enclosure, which you plug into your PC via USB. You get more than three times the re-writeable storage 160GB compared with 50GB - for less than $20 - and you don't need to buy a burner or player first! At these kind of prices you wonder if you really need Blu-ray discs at all to store your data or high-definition video. If you keep on buying just 160GB drives for $109 you'll always be ahead in storage capacity than with Blu-ray - and if you buy on of those 1TB (1000 GB) hard drives for less that $250 you'll be way, way in front. So, when will Blu-ray become cheaper than buying hard disks?! Please read on to page 3. |
