Beating Firefox 3.0 to the opening night accolades is Opera 9.5, the latest version of the free browser from the Norwegian browser company, available for Windows, Macs and Linux PCs. Time for a standing ovation?

Although browsers such as Internet Explorer, Safari and Firefox get their share of critical acclaim, Opera Software has been nurturing its own stable of stars for so long now that its performances can be seen virtually everywhere, from desktop and portable PCs, regular cellphones, Nintendo Wii and DS consoles and smartphones such as the new HTC Touch Diamond.

But Opera Software’s virtuoso is surely the desktop version, which has now gone through an extensive beta testing program to emerge as the new Opera 9.5, delivering cross-platform compatibility, support for open Web standards and a commitment from Opera Software to speed and performance, which Opera say “culminates to create the most powerful Opera browser yet.”

Although already seen in preview versions of Opera 9.5, the new set of features is now set in stone and ready for users of older versions to upgrade to and take advantage of.

One of the headline acts in Opera 9.5 is the “Opera Link”. This ensures that your bookmarks, your “Speed Dial” of most accessed sites and notes (such as directions, shopping lists or any other notes) you’ve taken in the Opera browser “can follow you anywhere”.

You can access your Opera Link information through Opera Mini on your mobile phone, or other Opera 9.5 browsers on other computers once you’ve logged in using your username and password.

Another addition to Opera 9.5 lets you “find anything” on a previously browsed web page. Using the “Quick Find” feature, you only need to remember a word from a page you’ve read earlier, entering it into the address bar to bring up a list of pages with matching text, so you won’t need to hunt through your ‘history’ list to find that missing page once more.

Opera has also given its star of the online stage a complete makeover, saying it has modernised its look and feel with a “sharp new skin with clean lines and clear icons”. According to Opera, “the ‘New Tab’ button and other elements have been modified to make the switch to a better Web experience more intuitive”, while platform-specific skins let the browser look more at home with your operating system of choice.

What else has Opera added to its performance? After this short intermission, please surf on over to page two for the second act!
