‘Concerned’ also pointed me to a map of Optus mobile coverage, most of which still shows the 3.5G network is still to come.

Well, if Optus is indeed installing some 2100MHz equipment in some rural and regional areas, that is certainly a fantastic thing for those customers wanting to use standard 3.5G HSDPA phones as used in metropolitan cities, as opposed to either a GSM handset or one Nokia 900MHz 3.5G handset currently on the market (with many more still to come).

But if those rural and regional users don’t live right in the country cities blessed with 2100MHz, and live a bit out of town, chances are they’re back on 2G GSM, and without the benefits of HSDPA data speeds – or the range benefits of the 900MHz network, which is the reason why Optus and Vodafone are installing 900MHz 3.5G equipment in rural and regional areas in the first place, and why Telstra went with the 850MHz 3.5G Next G network itself.

Now I checked that Radio Frequency site (linked on the previous page) and using the ‘Guest Login’ I couldn't see which sites were using what frequency of 3G or 2G, but could only tell where sites were located. I’m guessing that 'Concerned' works in the industry and has a higher level of access.

But whether ‘Concerned’ is correct or not, it goes against what Optus has said in its own press releases, and doesn’t help the presumed vast majority of other rural and regional areas that will be getting 900MHz.

So, why am I – and others – wondering whether Telstra will sell the iPhone or not? Some of those wondering are Telstra customers and so naturally want to get an iPhone through Telstra.

Others still will want the range that Telstra can offer today – at 3.5G speeds – on a device like the iPhone.

Of course, we know the iPhone 3G WILL actually work on 850MHz. But none of these reasons are why I want Telstra to sell the iPhone.

Why do I want them to? Please read on to page 4.
