3G iPhone smaller than expected? E-mail

Still, I can’t imagine any retailer that would be silly enough not to check for themselves whether or not the 3G iPhone cases they’re buying – even if on the cheap – will actually fit the 3G iPhone or not.

After all, which decent retailer really wants to invite trouble with their customers?

That said, traditional retail stores aren’t the only source of iPhone accessories. Many cities have weekend “markets” which see all manner of new products sold, and throughout the clothes, arts and crafts and other products, you’ll often find several stores selling phone covers and accessories amongst other electronic devices, such as watches, mp3 players and more.

It’s here that some of these supposedly dodgy 3G iPhone cases might end up, but in the quest to buy a replacement for a 2G iPhone case I bought from the Apple Store in San Francisco, I visited one of these markets and was fully able to try different cases out before I decided to buy one.

The first that I purchased seemed ok but had a very unusual “locking” mechanism to seal the plastic case up, and ultimately it broke rather quickly.

The second case I purchased was much better, and I’m sorry I didn’t check that particular market stall before making my initial purchase of a replacement plastic iPhone case a few weeks earlier.

I think the plastic case I purchased in San Francisco was ironically a Griffin case – the same brand iDeals China is now fingering for jumping the 3G iPhone case gun, but the case I purchased was hard plastic and not silicone.

The case itself didn’t break, but the belt holder, and because Australia still isn’t officially selling the 2G iPhone (with Vodafone and Optus promising to sell the iPhone “later this year”) I couldn’t find that case again at any stores I visited in Australia, and because I wanted instant gratification, I just went with what was available at the markets, and on my second attempt got quite close to what I’d originally purchased, which has been good enough so far.

Relying on 3G iPhone cases from manufacturers before the 3G iPhone is officially released sadly is no true confirmation of the 3G iPhone's dimensions, nor any proof of front mounted cameras and the rest... Indeed it's quite silly, but hey, it's all part of the sideshow pre-June 9!

So... here’s the photo from iDealsChina. Final confirmation on who’s right and who’s wrong in 4 sleeps time!
