Toby Walsh has been elected a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI).

Walsh is only the fourth Australian to receive this honour since 1990.

He runs the 'managing complexity' group at NICTA's Neville Roach Laboratory in Sydney.

"Professor Walsh has made a major contribution to the Smart Transport and Roads (STaR) traffic management project, which NICTA is undertaking in collaboration with the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority," said Terry Percival, managing laboratory director at NICTA.

Walsh described the fellowship as "a great personal honour" and a demonstration that Australian research can be world class.

"I am very excited by the prospect of taking our technologies and applying them to challenging, real-world problems at NICTA like scheduling Sydney's traffic lights better," he said.

NICTA is the government-funded information and communications technology research centre of excellence.
