Page 1 of 3 Bradlow was in Melbourne, yet was about to talk and interact with the audience for 15 minutes and “conducted a real time media conference following the function.” Bradlow is far from the first man to use the technology, however. Musion Eyeliner itself says it “produces images of high resolution and quality that make them unmistakably real, which is what happened when Gorillaz & Madonna performed the opening number at the recent Grammy Awards”, while Richard Branson, FIFA and many others have also used the technology to impress their audiences. Group Managing Director for Telstra Enterprise and Government, David Thodey, said "We've all seen this sort of thing in futuristic sci-fi movies, but the reality is that it can be done here and now, as we have just demonstrated, because of the scope and capability of Telstra's world leading networks.” "It demonstrates what we at Telstra call 'Next Dimension Working' - a new and more productive way of working using technology to achieve better outcomes and an enhanced user experience from where ever you choose to be or whatever medium you choose to use.” Telstra says “the hologram was delivered over Telstra's high speed network using the Musion Eyeliner System, a high definition holographic video projection system that allows three-dimensional moving images to appear within a live stage setting.” But – just because the Musion Eyeliner system describes itself as a hologram, does that make it so? Musion Eyeliner’s definition of its technology, from its website says that it is a “unique high-definition video holographic projection system allowing spectacular freeform 3D hologram effects to be projected within a live stage setting using Peppers Ghost technology.” The following events, companies and distinguished people have already used Musion Eyeliner Technology: Speedo LZR Racer Launch '08, Prince Charles Hologram, Cisco- Holographic Video Conferencing, Target - Holographic Fashion Show, David Beckham - Adidas Launch '07, Fiat 500 Launch - Car Configurator, Al Gore - Live Earth Tokyo '07, Girls Aloud - Sunsilk Launch '07, Toyota Auris Launch '07, GE - Farnborough Airshow '06, Gorillaz - MTV Awards '05, Gorillaz & Madonna - Grammy Awards, Virgin Digital Launch '05, Fiat Punto Launch '05, FIFPRO World XI Player Awards, Land Rover Discovery 3 Launch, BMW 7 Series Launch. So, the technology is already at least 3 years old, and Telstra could have given this demonstration three years ago if it so chose, unless, of course, its network wasn’t able to handle the bandwidth back then. So, is the 3D projection a hologram, or not? Please read on to page 2. |
