Ballmer: Vista “not a failure” but here’s a Windows 7 demo E-mail

So, the Windows 7 information is finally being let out of the bag, with Microsoft hoping that Windows Vista II, currently called Windows 7, will erase the bad feelings caused by Vista’s troubled release.

Touch-screen technology won’t be enough to save Windows 7 if there are any repeat performances of the Vista launch debacles, and the big question will remain on just how affordable multi-touch technology will be to implement on the next generation of desktop and notebook PCs.

After all, Tablet PCs still command a hefty price premium five years after initially launching, and while Tablet PCs are, in my opinion at least, an awesome technology, most of the PC using world simply hasn’t taken advantage of it.

Gates and Ballmer also say that Windows 7 will come in late 2009. That’s one promise already broken, as originally they wanted to release it in early 2010. Releasing it instead in Q3 2009 ensures Microsoft can take advantage of the biggest PC sales period of the year, to avoid the Windows Vista debacle of getting off to a slow January start!

With 18 months to go before Windows 7 launches, and with Windows 7 seemingly already well advanced, especially with the Surface technology overlay, I can only hope Microsoft is really focusing on quality control, performance and total compatibility with Vista hardware and software as Microsoft is promising.

I guess we’ll all see when the first beta of Windows 7 emerges, quite possibly later this early and certainly sometime early next.

And if you haven’t moved to Vista yet, and you’re still happy with your XP computer, there’s no great rush to move over any more even though Microsoft says you can safely do so and then easily upgrade to Windows 7 later.

After all, why buy a whole brand new computer now if in 18 months Windows 7 will be available, unless you really need to?

It sounds like Windows 7 will effectively be the version of Vista that Vista should have been the first time around. They’ve got plenty of time now to make sure they get it right!
