Talk of 42Mbps HSPA+ 3G iPhone pure fantasy? E-mail

A Telstra announcement – if it will ever come – may come this week, regarding iPhone sales. Already it has been beaten to the iPhone announcement punch by its Australian competitors, Optus and Vodafone.

Personally, colour me sceptical Telstra said any such thing, well, about 42Mbps 3G iPhones, but stranger things have happened, I suppose.

I’m sure a 42Mbps HSPA+ iPhone will appear, but I wouldn’t expect it before the end of 2009, and perhaps even not until 2010. And I do expect Telstra to announce an iPhone deal soon, but just a regular 3G/3.5G iPhone at 7.2Mbps like everyone else.

I’d bet a 42Mbps iPhone would need better batteries, too – 42Mbps download speeds would surely chew through batteries like there was no tomorrow.

Ah well, it’s iPhone rumour season, after all. Sadly, not all of them are believable. Just like the story that Steve Jobs’ grandmother is a two-headed alien from the planet Zblath.
