Like Grand Thefts of the past, the game-play centres on violent crime, taking the role of Nico Bellic, recently emigrated from Eastern Europe where he fought as a teenager in the Bosnian War. With the wondrous whisperings of Cousin Roman in his ear, Nico arrives with dreams of a life of luxury. Instead he finds himself helping Roman in his fledgling taxi and petty crime industry. From this starting point life for Nico can only improve the further up the crime ladder he ascends. But GTA IV should not be banned because of this back story. The story of Nico Bellic is a touching human drama; “Life is complicated. I killed people, smuggled people, sold people. Perhaps here, things will be different,” says Bellic sometime into the game. The mission structure in GTA IV is superb, predominately using your mobile phone getting in touch with contacts Bellic has made through out the game, organising jobs, setting up meetings at bars or clubs or simply chewing the fat. Incoming calls can be ignored or taken at will, adding to the sense of freedom. |
