My conclusion?

Unless Apple’s Steve Jobs decides to roll out at least two different 3G iPhone models catering to different worldwide frequencies, there will be a quad-band HSDPA 3.5G iPhone so that one model covers the planet, alongside existing 2G networks.

So, what did a Vodafone spokesperson say in answer to my emailed questions about 3G phones operating in the 900MHz frequency in Australia?

I already explored the answers to the following questions from Optus in my previous iPhone story, and have been awaiting Vodafone’s answers, which arrived earlier this afternoon.

In my email, I asked Vodafone Australia whether 3G phones with 900MHz and 2100MHz (the two 3G/3.5G standards Vodafone supports) are already available in Australia, and if they knew of any 850/900/2100MHz phones.

The response from Vodafone’s spokesperson was: “Vodafone Australia’s forthcoming range of mobile phones will be dual-band 3G, supporting both 3G 900 MHz and 2100 MHz. The expectation is that 3G tri-band and quad-band products will be available in the future.”

I then asked if any 3G phones with a 900MHz chip currently exist, and if 850MHz phones would work in the 900MHz band, which I assumed they would not.

The answer was: “Vodafone Australia has already launched the Nokia 6121, which is a 900 MHz handset that operates on both the 900 MHz and 2100 MHz frequencies. Vodafone is planning to release more 900 MHz devices over the coming months. These devices will also operate on the 2100 MHz frequency.”

The answer continued: “Current 3G 850MHz devices will not operate on the 3G 900MHz network and would instead default to operate on the available 2G network in those areas.”

So, was there any hint that the iPhone that Vodafone Australia will soon be selling could actually operate on the 900MHz frequency? Please read onto page 3.
