While Foster claimed "Street View only contains imagery that anyone can already see walking down a public street," there have been complaints that some of the photos could only have been taken by entering private land.

Street View is currently offered for Google Maps of over three dozen cities around the US, plus Yosemite National Park. The company plans to extend coverage to Australian cities before the end of 2008, and vehicles have been seen taking the required photos.

The company also announced that face blurring will be applied to images when the service launches in New Zealand.
