At the top of the Greendex survey (the country that was most environmentally friendly) was India and Brazil. The United States ranked the lowest of the fourteen countries.

The ranking showed these results for the 14 countries:

1.    Brazil and India
2.    China
3.    Mexico
4.    Hungary
5.    Russia
6.    United Kingdom
7.    Australia and Germany
8.    Spain
9.    Japan
10.    France
11.    Canada
12.    United States

Brazil ranked high because a high percentage of its households were small and self sustaining, and its citizens also performed well in the headings of transportation and goods. Most Brazilian homes are not heated and not air conditioned.

India ranked high in the three major sections of housing, transportation, and food.

The United States ranked last on three of the four major sections (transportation, housing, and goods), and was near the bottom on food.
