Over one hundred epic hours of classic NASA footage from the 1960s and 70s have been upgraded to high definition (HD) for the fiftieth anniversary of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). See them soon on Earth!

The announcement of the Discovery Channel special was made in New York City at the premiere screening of the movie “In the Shadow of the Moon,” a film that tells the story of the Apollo missions from the perspective of its astronauts.

(A review of the movie is found at the Space.com website: “Film Review – 'In the Shadow of the Moon'” The movie will be publicly aired in the summer of 2008.)

The NASA footage was updated to HD by the Discovery Channel for its upcoming documentary "When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions," which premiers June 2008.

The documentary includes activities of NASA from 1958 to the present, including the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Space Shuttle programs. The London, United Kingdom-based production company Dangerous Films produced the documentary.

The documentary "When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions” will air on the Discovery Channel on consecutive Sundays in June: specifically, June 8, 15, and 22, 2008

According to Robert Hopkins, NASA chief of Strategic Communications, "This partnership with Discovery enables NASA to bring the excitement of 50 years of exploration and discovery to a wider audience. This leverages NASA's compelling content with Discovery's state-of-the-art production capability and technology to tell the NASA story - past, present and future - through a variety of media and platforms." The documentary will include film that has never been seen by the public after the Discovery Channel was granted permission to view approximately 500 hours of archived video from NASA.

The footage will eventually be available for all to view from the archives of NASA.

Two of the special events included in the HD footage are the Gemini 4 spacewalk, by astronaut Ed White, the first spacewalk by an American, and the first landing on the Moon by the Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. Interviews by John Glenn and Buzz Aldrin are also included in the special.

Until then a few select videos are on the MSNBC website “Relive NASA’s glory days in glorious HD.”

On Tuesday, May 7, 2008, the HD-restored footage, along with audio tapes, will be presented to NASA administrator Michael Griffin at the U.S. Capital Building (Washington, D.C.) by U.S. Senator Bill Nelson of Florida.

The documentary "When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions" is available at the Discovery Channel website "DiscoveryStore".

The documentary will help to popularize the space agency as "NASA explores for answers that power our future.”
