Speaking at the PlayStation Day conference in the UK, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe chief David Reeves was chuffed to announce that despite a sixteen month head-start, the PlayStation 3 had overhauled rival Xbox 360 in European sales.Featured Whitepaper

According to Sony, 5 million PS3’s have made homes in Europe "We are particularly proud of this as it has been achieved in a similar time frame as PlayStation 2 which retailed, if you remember, at a significantly lower price," Reeves said. Continuing his stat laden talk, Reeves touched on the following PlayStation brand numbers: 12 Million European PSP’s sold. 48 Million European PS2’s sold. 3.2 Million registered PlayStation Network users who have downloaded 57 million items from the PlayStation Store. EyeToy Games have topped 6.7 million with Buzz at 6 million and SingStar over 12 million sold. "These numbers are a testament to the strength of the PlayStation brand throughout our region, the ever-increasing number of titles being launched, the rich content on offer and its appeal to different demographics and cultures." Reeves said. When queried about how the PS3 had recovered from a slow start he indicated that it is all about "….the quality of the software. And now with exclusive titles such as Haze, LBP, Resistance, MotorStorm, customers are buying into PS3 as the ultimate gaming system." He could have added bundling of the latest Grand Theft Auto IV blockbuster surely has shifted PS3 hardware in Europe also.
