Page 2 of 2 Hyper-V is a virtualisation technology in version 1.0, which will, when it is released, have just left the beta/release candidate stage. Version 1.0 technologies are notoriously unreliable. Sure, companies will be testing Hyper-V out. Many are likely doing it right now in test environments. But trusting Hyper-V to reliably virtualise important servers? After Microsoft’s recent snafus, including data corruption with Microsoft Dynamics? I don’t think so. Corporate CIOs would have to have rocks in their heads to do that. Hyper-V needs time to mature. Give me an SP1 first, and even then, I’m not going to trust it. Give me Hyper-V version 2.0, or even 3.0 – the usual time frame Microsoft takes to get anything right – before seriously considering making the jump to the space around Hyper-V. I’m sure Hyper-V will mature into a solid competitor to VMware and Citrix. After all, Microsoft can see what VMware and Citrix have achieved, and undoubtedly have their respective technologies installed in Microsoft’s software development labs, pouring over every feature, capability and benefit. I’m sure Microsoft are also envious of both Citrix’s and VMware virtual desktop capabilities, letting companies virtualise not only their server infrastructure, but complete desktop fleets in ways – and with stability and performance - that Microsoft could only have dreamed of achieving. So, Hyper-V. The hype around you will be drummed up big time by the folks at Redmond. They’ll go red in the face with all the hypish hoo-hah and hullabaloo. We’ll probably even hear more about Hyper-V’s technologies being implemented within the upcoming Windows 7, as I have heard snippets of already. But it probably won’t be until Windows 7 is truly due that Hyper-V will be truly ready, too. In the meantime, Hyper-V, expect VMware and Citrix have their snipers trained on you. Your birth and early days are coming, but it won’t be an easy ride, VMware and Citrix will certainly see to that.
